7 Ways to Show Appreciation and Say ‘Thank You’

Grateful Flatlay

It’s November, the month of Thanksgiving and a cliche month to encourage people to show appreciation. It may be cliche, but it’s always a great time to show those around you how grateful you are for them. I’ve put together a list of a few of my favorite ways to say “Thank you,” some simple and some a little more elaborate! Whichever side you tend to lean to, just take some extra time this month to be thankful.

Send a Card
Snail mail is one of my absolute favorite things. Between the funny cards, colorful pens, and unique postage, how could you not love it!? When I’m thinking about someone I pull out my stash of cards, write them a note, add a couple of fun doodles and seal it with a colorful strip of washi tape. I think it is so much more personal than shooting over a quick text. I probably enjoy sending mail as much as a enjoy getting mail, it’s a dying art!

Cook a Special Dinner
In my house, my husband does most of the cooking. We’ll say it’s because he loves it, and not because I just rotate my three favorite meals. Anyway, when I’m feeling extra thankful for my husband or want to show appreciation for him being so patient with my craziness, I’ll surprise him with dinner. Most of the time, I try to go out of my comfort zone to make it extra special.

Give a Simple Gift
I used to think a gift card was such a lazy and insincere gift, but the older I get and the more I realize how much I enjoy receiving gift cards, I think they’re a great and easy way to say thank you. There are a handful of gift card options I think can never be wrong: Starbucks, Target and when in doubt Visa!

Go Somewhere
Sometimes a little time away from everything is needed for both sides of a relationship. It can be the smallest of outings, like taking a co-worker to happy hour, or your mother-in-law to a little boutique she’s been talking about. I also like to think that taking my dogs on a nice hike is showing appreciation for their love, but they never seem to take it that way.

Make Something
Everyone is gifted with a talent; crafting, baking, the list goes on. Take time out of your day to make them something they didn’t ask for. Baking is my thing, during the holidays I try to bake as much as I can for other people. It’s my way of gifting those I care about with my talents.

Be There
In a world that’s hectic and fast-paced, giving someone your full attention is hard. One of the most sincere ways to say thank you might be to just shut everything off, and just be present. Whether this is over wine with a girlfriend, or before-bed conversations with your significant other, make a mental note to put everything else aside and give them your full self.

Simply Say ‘Thank you!’
Wow! That easy, huh? I mean seriously how many times does someone do something for you and you either slide right past, or throw out an empty “thanks”? I have tried to make a point to give more genuine, look ‘em in the eye “thank you’s.” Not only does this show the other person you’re sincerity, but I also think it has helps me realize how much I have to be thankful for.

Sometimes it is easy to take for granted the people in our lives. I encourage you to take some time today and show your appreciation!

My Top 10 (Not So Scary) Halloween Movie Picks

It’s finally October which means it’s officially Halloween movie season! Hocus Pocus  played on Freeform last night and I’ll give you one guess where I’ll was! I’m not a scary movie kind of girl, so I’ve put together a list of my favorite, not so scary, Halloween movie picks.

hocus pocus

Hocus Pocus–This is probably every woman’s favorite Halloween movie. Quotes from the movie serve as inspiration to everything from home decor, to tshirts and mugs! It’s an over-the-top comedy with witches, black cats, and lots of laughs. It will be a classic for many years to come!

practical magic

Practical Magic–A 90s classic, in my opinion! Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are witchcraft #goals. You’ve got drama and romance. Most importantly, you’ve got magic and witches!

harry potter

Harry Potter–Yes, I know. Harry Potter isn’t technically a Halloween movie, but with witches, wizards, goblins, trolls and nearly headless ghosts; I call it close enough! If you don’t have enough time to watch all eight films, (I’m not sure what could possibly be more important…) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is your best bet for that low-key Halloween feeling.

rocky horor

Rocky Horror Picture Show–It’s a cult classic. The story of lovebirds Brad and Janet, whose car breaks down. They seek shelter in a nearby castle and where weird things ensue.

time warp again

Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do The Time Warp Again–I can’t even with this remake. Laverne Cox KILLS it as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The Music. The Costumes. Original diehard fans will disown me for saying this, but I love this version so much more!

casper

Casper–This movie brings back MAJOR childhood feels! On the surface, the story is about the paranormal activity of an abandoned house, but we all know the true story lies in the friendship that Kat and Casper develop as they help each other come to terms with tragedies in their respectives pasts.

hotel transylvania

Hotel Transylvania–This light-hearted animated movie is enjoyable, and as most animated movies do, provides a couple of great messages. Several classic and spooky halloween characters head on vacation to Hotel Transylvania and learn that prejudgements are not always right.

halloween town

Halloweentown–The 90s child in me rejoices for this movie! I watched this on repeat when it would come on the Disney Channel. I always dreamed that my grandma was secretly a witch and I could run away to Halloweentown!

coco

Coco–My new favorite Disney Pixar movie just happens to fit into this category! A Day of the Dead inspired movie that teaches the importance of family, because Disney, duh.

its the great pumpkin

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown–I couldn’t leave this Halloween classic off the list. Follow along with the whole Peanuts gang as they wait for the Great Pumpkin!

Weekend Getaway In New York City

This past weekend, I was able to sneak away for a fun getaway with a few friends in New York City! I lost a day due to a flight cancellations, but made it to The Big Apple just in time for dinner! We did some sightseeing, ate some good food, and drank a few glasses of wine. We had such a great time!

Where we stayed:

Moxy NYC Time Square We stayed at a super fun boutique hotel called Moxy. This Marriott micro hotel has an upscale New York feel from the moment you walk in the door. The hotel prides itself on its bold and cool aesthetic. The rooms are minimalistic, but who is going to be spending much time in their room anyway!?

What we ate:

Paul’s On Time Square This was my first meal in NYC, and it did not disappoint. The weather was perfect, so we sat on their little patio with a slight view of Time Square, but all the sounds of The City radiated up to the second floor. We shared a margarita pizza and a Ceasar salad, it was a great start to the trip.

Loeb Boathouse Central Park The Boathouse is tucked away within Central Park and serves as a reminder of a 150 year-old tradition. Dining by the lake within Central Park became popular in the 1860s, and although the Loeb Boathouse is not the original structure, this building was opened in 1954 and is a prime spot for a fun girls brunch, or a romantic dinner. The views are spectacular, the food was amazing and the service was top notch.

Doughnuttery Located within Chelsea Market, this original location of Doughnuttery serves mini doughnuts with both traditional and not-so-traditional flavor combinations. We grabbed a dozen and each picked a flavor to try: Speckled Strawberry, Lemon Pop, Cinnamon Sugar and Traditional Glazed with Sprinkles. The traditional glazed drizzle with sprinkles was the crowd favorite, but it was a tough decision.

Caliente Cab Company You can take the girls out of Texas, but apparently you can’t take the Tex-Mex out of the girls! After walking around Chelsea and West Village, we ended up at a Mexican food restaurant. I didn’t have high expectations going in, but the food was actually really good! We went with your Tex-Mex staples: empanadas, nachos and quesadillas, and, of course, a few margaritas were had.

Pasticceria Rocco After our Tex-Mex dinner, we were searching for dessert and stumbled upon this place, and boy am I glad we did! I have an extreme passion for Italian food, and Italian pastries. This family owned bakery was founded in 1974 by an Italian native following his American Dream. As you walk in, you are greeted by the delicious aroma of sweets and coffee. I ordered an espresso, a cannoli and a lobster tail (Yes, all three just for me!!). Their menu says “world famous cannoli,” and I believe it. I loved everything about this place, and I want to go back, pronto!

The Bagel Store Home of the “Original Rainbow Bagel!” Sunday morning we hopped the subway and headed to Brooklyn, for one of our more child-like fascinations. This place touts itself as “the bagel that broke the internet,” and I kind of have to believe them! This tiny little shop on an unassuming street in Brooklyn was packed with people ready to try the infamous rainbow bagel, although we found out the REAL rainbow bagel had a funfetti cream cheese and was topped with cotton candy and sprinkles, which we all thought was a little much. We settled with two regular rainbow bagels and one bedazzled bagel! Although they really don’t taste any different from your average bagel, it was a fun experience and certainly brought out our youth!

Brooklyn Roasting Company After venturing through Brooklyn looking for a place to shop, we stopped into Brooklyn Roasting Company for a quick cup of coffee. Located on a corner right across the street from the East River, its exposed pipes and brick walls made for a cozy spot to relax.

Tony’s Di Napoli Hands down my favorite meal in NYC! We’re talking, loud, family-style Italian food with good wine flowing! By this point, we had met up with my friends’ work group so there were about 15 of us. We ordered one of everything, and I didn’t hear a single complaint. I personally thought everything was delicious. I’ve already decided it is a must for my next trip.

What we did:

Central Park It is almost hard for me to grasp Central Park. It’s this massive, lush, serene park in the middle of the chaos of The Big Apple. It was hard to tell the difference between the locals and the tourists here. There were people running, biking, lounging, reading, sleeping, and even playing baseball. We entered the park toward the middle (at 86th street) and strolled south. The Belvedere Castle was closed for renovations, which we were pretty bummed about. We stopped for brunch at the Loeb Boathouse, grabbed a slice of quiche and a mimosa, and we continued on our stroll. The next time I go to NYC, I’m going to make a Home Alone: Lost in New York sightseeing list, because that’s all I kept saying “I wonder where Kevin talks to the bird lady?” (Explains the entire section of my photos in my phone of the Plaza Hotel.)

Chelsea Market I didn’t really know what to expect when going to Chelsea Market, but this unique building is filled with shops, bakeries, restaurants, and food carts. If you’re looking for shopping, this probably isn’t where I’d recommend you go, but if you’ve got a group of people you need to satisfy for a meal, this is definitely your place! This is where we got our precious and delicious mini doughnuts!

High Line The High Line is an urban park constructed using a portion of an old elevated freight line. Running almost a mile and a half, with plenty of places to sit and relax, the High Line provides another great option for the serenity of nature within the city.

Washington Square Park Although Washington Square Park is a notable NYC landmark, it was not originally on our list of to-do’s; it just happened to be close to the subway station we were going to, so we decided to stop by. It was after dark when we got to the park, and we arrived at a portion that was not well lit or crowded. I had to talk the girls into continuing on past the creepy part. Once we got to the other side of the park, there were tons of people and we felt completely safe. Behind the arch, there are several vendors, musicians and artists set up around the fountain. There were two guys performing a hand puppet play on the side of the arch, and a guy who had developed a BEAUTIFUL masterpiece out of sand. This was a fun little check off the list.

Brooklyn Bridge Another leisurely activity for this trip. The Brooklyn Bridge was opened in 1883 and is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States. The walk, of just over a mile, provides a great view of Manhattan, and Brooklyn (depending on which way you’re walking). I need to do some research on a less crowded time to walk the bridge, but late Sunday morning is NOT one of those times! Other than it being extremely crowded (pedestrians, and cyclists), this was a great way to experience Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. There is also a great photo opportunity of the Manhattan Bridge near the intersection of Front Street and Washington Street.

Broadway Musical If you were to ask me if you should see a play while in New York City, the answer would be one thousand times yes! Let me preface that statement with this: I grew up in theater and have always had a love for music. This trip, we went to Wicked, which happens to be one of my favorite musicals of all time. This was actually my first on-Broadway play, and it was fantastic! Tickets to on-Broadway plays can sometimes be pricey, but you can find a lot of off-Broadway products for very reasonable prices. You might be able to catch the “next big thing” before it hits Broadway. Either way, I highly recommend taking the time to watch a show while in The City.

Transportation We walked, took the Subway or used Uber as our methods of transportation while in New York City. For the most part, we used the Subway, although we did take a couple of Uber rides. There are a few apps that helped us navigate The Big Apple. I downloaded the Citymapper app, which was great for navigating the subway system. It provides real-time updates on train arrivals, delays, and route changes. The Apple Maps app was great for providing us walking directions throughout The City.

Fall Bucket List

The weather is FINALLY starting to cool down in my neck of the woods, which only means one thing.. Fall is here! Fall is on the top of my list of favorites because it’s the beginning of all my favorite times of year; you’ve got fall, that leads to costumes at Halloween, that leads to pies at Thanksgiving, that leads to presents at Christmas, that leads to Champagne at New Year’s, that leads to… well we won’t get too far ahead of ourselves. Anyway, I love fall and to help everyone else get ready for their Fall, I’ve put together a list of things I want to do this Fall.

  1. Attend a Football Game and Tailgate. This one isn’t much of a bucket list item as it is a tradition. Football, especially college football (Wreck ‘Em Tech!), is a major part of our lives in the Fall. Nothing is better on a Saturday than getting dressed in your college colors, watching College Gameday, then heading to campus and spending the day with thousands of your closest friends.

2. Autumn at the Arboretum. @thedallasarboretum Every year, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden hosts a Fall festival with that includes a themed village made of more than 90,000 pumpkins, squash and gourds . I’ve lived in Dallas for almost five years, and have never made it to this Dallas staple. I’m determined, this will be my year!

3. Pumpkin Patch. I love decorating with real pumpkins, they may not last as long or be as cost-effective, but that’s just how I roll. I’m talking about taking the trek out of town to the closest pumpkin patch and going on a quest for those perfect pick. If it comes down to it, sometimes I have to settle for a tent set up in a parking lot, but I still always use a wagon and take a couple laps around to see my options.

4. Decorate for Fall. There’s no better way to get yourself ready for the season than to surround yourself with reminders of it! Ghosts here, skeletons there, pumpkins everywhere! Even if it’s as simple as a search on Pinterest for a new Fall wreath idea; fall decor can be as classy or as ghoulish as you make it. Find your style and go with it!

5. Halloween Costume. This is probably my favorite part of Fall. I love a good theme, and I absolutely LOVE to dress up. I’m the crazy person who wants to dress up for 80s nights at the gym, or make crazy shirts for family game night. Sometimes I even drag my dogs into it.  It just means I’m fun, okay? Anyway, I’m not sure what the costume will be this year, but I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on Instagram!

6. Pass out Halloween Candy. You can’t tell me you don’t like to see all those little ones walking around dressed up! I think even the most anti-halloween souls can appreciate a mini princess or superhero. Either way, if you buy enough candy, you’re bound to have plenty left over to enjoy yourself and who doesn’t love that!?

7. Smores. Whether it’s over a bonfire or in a chiminea, making smores is a Fall classic. They’re the perfect after-dinner snack and can tell you a lot about a person. Are they a fire-kissed, or a fully engulfed mallow person? I’m the later, I’ll let you decide what that says about me.

8. Outdoor Movie Night. Living in Texas, it takes a while for our weather to turn bitterly cold, which means most Fall nights are perfect for outdoor activities. Grab your snuggle buddy (I’ll let you know if that ends up being my husband or a puppy), some snacks and a cozy blanket and have an outdoor movie night!

9. Update Your Fall Wardrobe. Like you would expect any different. Fall is when I feel like my wardrobe is finally comfortable. Over sized sweaters, leggings and booties. Just call me basic.

10. Bake Fall Goodies. Baking, to me, is so satisfying. Nothing says ‘Hello Autumn!’ like a fresh baked pie and a house that smells better than any Bath & Bodyworks candle. Don’t get me wrong, some of those candle scents are to die for! Stay tuned for a post of my top candle scents for the season!

11. Take a hike through a nature preserve/scenic park. Take advantage of the crisp air and changing leaves for a nice stroll through one of nature’s best chapters.

12. Hit up Starbucks. Okay, this isn’t much different than any other time of year, but my order does change. I used to be a ride-or-die PSL girl, but I’ve outgrown my basic ways and moved on to Chai Tea Lattes. I’ll certainly have more than my fair share over the next few months!

13. Whip up a batch of homemade chili and cornbread. Cold weather means soups, stews and chili are back in the weekly dinner rotation. If you’re from Texas, you probably have a ‘family chili recipe,’ now is the time to break it out!

14. Send notes to friends and family telling them the reasons you’re thankful for them. The most important part of Fall is Thanksgiving; a time where we get together with family and celebrate all there is to be thankful for. This year, take a different approach and send friends and family a quick note telling them why you’re thankful for them. We all know how much I love snail mail!

15. Donate food to the less fortunate. As we celebrate all there is to be thankful for, we should also share our fortunes with those who might not have as much to celebrate this time of year. There are many different ways to do so, donate food or funds to a local food bank or even donate your time to a local soup kitchen. No matter how little you give, I guarantee it will make a difference to someone.
